It is with great pride that I have the honor to announce that PaperWorks Packaging Group has been awarded the Procter & Gamble 2012 External Business Partner Excellence Award.

PaperWorks received this prestigious honor for consistently performing at high levels as determined by broad-based quantitative and qualitative evaluations from P&G employees in multiple product categories throughout the supply chain. Out of 80,000+ P&G suppliers worldwide, there are only 20 in the Packaging and Hygiene category that receive this honor. Out of that number only three (3) are in North America and PaperWorks is one of them. Lisa Ott, P&G NA Purchases Group Manager commented: “You should all be extremely excited and proud of your team’s ccomplishments over the last year in partnership with P&G."

Initiated in 2008, P&G committed to meeting annually with its top performing external business partners to recognize and celebrate those suppliers that have demonstrated partner excellence by performing with top results in P&G’s Supplier Performance Management System (SPMS). The SPMS focuses on metrics associated with the commercial, operational, innovation and relationship performance categories. From its ranks of more than 50,000 external business partners, about 600 external business partners participate in the SPMS program.

We could not have accomplished this without solid leadership, great account management, teamwork, and dedication from everyone at PaperWorks.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, February 14, 2012 – As part of its ongoing commitment to the environment and customers that value ecological packaging, PaperWorks today announced increased environmental certifications for its Packaging Group. The company now offers FSC and SFI certification at all its packaging locations, FSC paperboard at its Paperboard Group mills, and FSC, SFI and PEFC products at its Paperboard Group converting sites.

“As an environmentally conscious company, our role is to ensure that at no point in our process do we mix certified paper products with uncertified products,” said Kyla Fisher, Corporate Sustainability Director for PaperWorks. “These certifications show consumers that the products they purchase have been assured for the best environmental and social management practices in forestry.”

“Our customers value forestry certification for a number of reasons,” said John Hartwell, Executive Vice President of the Packaging Group. “Many of them have corporate policies stating that they only want certified wood products. We’ve heard their concerns, and responded by making sure our chain of custody is more rigorous than ever.”

With forestry certifications available across every division of the company, PaperWorks continues to improve its status as a company that provides value-added sourcing options for minimal added cost. “We’re proud to be proactive in offering sustainable packaging solutions,” Hartwell says. “Working in partnership with all three of these valued certification organizations, we’ve ensured that we match and exceed standards for greener paperboard and packaging from start to finish.”

PaperWorks’ Crest Complete HolobriteTM package receives PPC Eco Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 26, 2011, Baldwinsville, NY – The results from the 68th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition are in and PaperWorks’ Crest Complete HolobriteTM package has been awarded the 2011 Eco Award.

The PaperWorks HolobriteTM package stood out for its innovation and design while maintaining the package’s recyclable, biodegradable and compostable qualities. Typically, holographic effects are accomplished through the lamination of non-biodegradable PET onto boxboard, a process that renders the package non-recyclable. The PaperWorks HolobriteTM package is unique in that the company succeeded in maintaining the package’s sustainable qualities by micro-embossing a reflective coating onto CRB boxboard.

“Our industry is one of innovation and excellence. It is an honor to be recognized for a package design that not only stands out on the shelf, but that is in line with PaperWorks’ commitment to being environmentally conscious. The ECO Award recognizes our efforts to create packages that use paperboard to create more sustainable packaging,” says John Hartwell, Executive Vice President, Packaging Group.

The process used by PaperWorks is not only less costly to produce, but also eliminates the need for off-site lamination, thereby reducing transportation costs, energy expenditures while reducing raw material consumption.

August 1 marks a milestone for a PaperWorks recycled board mill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 2, 2011, Wabash, IN – While Sunday is a day of rest, it was also a red-letter day for the PaperWorks mill in Wabash: Sunday, July 31 was the day the plant logged its one millionth consecutive hour without an accident.
“This is a very rare and impressive accomplishment for not only our industry, but any industry,” said Joe Atkinson, Director of Safety at PaperWorks. “Setting this kind of safety record in two years is nothing short of amazing.” Atkinson was the initiator of a company-wide safety program that was implemented across the company’s mills in 2009, and has since begun being instituted in its other facilities.

“Mill management and staff have really taken ownership of plant safety,” Atkinson said. “This is an accomplishment shared by everyone here, and only the first of many millions of incident-free hours to come.”

“Safety is a core value at PaperWorks. Achieving over two years without a lost time incident and over a million man-hours without a recordable incident can only happen with the attention and actions of all mill employees,” said Fred Kalakay, General Manager of the Wabash Mill. “These results are supported by a common-sense approach to the development of safety standards, communications, actions and audits, with a mill safety committee that has allowed employees to build a safety culture based on care and awareness. The safety journey does not end here...we must always safeguard against complacency and recognize that safety requires full-time attention.”

Philadelphia, PA, January 19, 2011 – PaperWorks Industries, Inc. is pleased to announce that Sun Capital Partners has acquired Rosmar Packaging Corporation, a well-regarded North American folding carton company. The newly acquired company will soon be integrated into PaperWorks, an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners.

Rosmar Packaging Corporation is one of the largest independent folding carton converters in North America. The company will be incorporated into the PaperWorks Packaging Group, bringing 750 employees and 5 facilities to PaperWorks. It produces products across the packaging value chain, including folding cartons, flexible packaging, litho-laminates and blister cards, serving primarily the food, consumer goods, pharmaceutical and beverage industries.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to work with a company of Rosmar’s standing,” stated PaperWorks Industries CEO Thomas J. Garland. “From their two-decade commitment to sustainability through their dedication to quality and customer service, Rosmar Packaging shares many of PaperWorks’ core values. We look forward to bringing them into our enterprise and moving together towards even greater successes.”

With five plants across Canada and the United States, the Rosmar Packaging acquisition will further expand the territory PaperWorks serves. “Rosmar’s existing client base in Mexico will make us a truly North American company,” Garland said. “On the whole, this merger will bring even greater value to our customers – increased capacity, significantly more product and process offerings, and greatly enhanced geographic reach.”

Domenic Mancini, Chairman of Rosmar Packaging and a partner at Novacap, Rosmar’s controlling shareholder, expressed satisfaction at the closure of the agreement between the companies. “Rosmar Packaging was a sound investment for Novacap – a great company that we’re sure will move on to even better things under the PaperWorks umbrella,” Mr. Mancini said. “As a company committed to quality and innovation, I can’t think of a better home for Rosmar Packaging than PaperWorks.”

The company’s Packaging Division is considered a leading innovator in the production of specialized folding cartons, with facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Manchester will ultimately be merged into PaperWorks, itself an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners.

With five facilities in Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Texas, Manchester Industries provides large-scale sheeting, rewinding and cutting operations to commercial printers and packaging companies across the continent. The company’s 180 employees will become part of the PaperWorks Paperboard Group.

“Manchester Industries has carved out its place as a world-class converter,” stated PaperWorks Industries CEO Thomas J. Garland. “These five plants will be a significant asset for PaperWorks as we move forward, and we intend to spare no effort to ensure that Manchester’s reputation for service and reliability is honored as they become part of the PaperWorks family. Its FSC, SFI and PEFC certifications show a commitment to quality that we will be proud to uphold.”

The acquisition will continue to add depth and breadth to PaperWorks’ North American paperboard offering. “This converting capacity will be a great asset to our existing core service of paperboard manufacturing,” Garland said. “With Manchester offering over a dozen paperboard grades and a range of services that start at custom sheeting and cutting and extend to almost every dimension of conversion, this adds an entire range of expertise to our Paperboard Group.”

“Manchester was founded a little over three decades ago with the guiding principle of providing value to our customers through both our products and services. PaperWorks has the financial strength and resources that will allow Manchester continued growth and ensure long-term viability for our customers, suppliers and employees,” said Ken Aspinall, President of Manchester Industries. “Finding the right company for Manchester meant finding a company that shares and upholds our core values, and I’m confident we’ve found such a partner in PaperWorks.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 8, 2010, Wabash, IN – Since the inception of the company in 2008, creating a safer workplace has been a key goal at PaperWorks. Today, PaperWorks announced that its Wabash, Indiana mill has a reached a significant milestone in its pursuit of safety in the workplace: over 400 days without a recordable incident. Not only is this a record for the new company, but also for the plant’s entire century-plus history.

“I am extremely proud of the progress that the team at Wabash has made over the past two years. The plant has improved in nearly every metric from housekeeping, safer work practices, cooperative labor/management relationships, productivity, workers’ comp costs, and employee morale. To exceed over a full year without a recordable incident is a remarkable achievement, especially considering the historical performance of the site,” said PaperWorks CEO Tom Garland.

The good news is a testament to the hard work and attention of the PaperWorks Paperboard Group, and validation of the company’s proprietary SafetyWorks program, a comprehensive multi-level initiative developed in-house to improve safety across its mills. Incorporating promotional, motivational and educational tools, SafetyWorks empowers workers to ensure that they are working in a safe environment, and also to watch out for their colleagues.

Safety Coordinator/Continuous Improvement Manager Chris Wetherford said that the collaborative process incorporated existing resources and a drive to succeed. “With the help of our employees, we took a look at what worked with our program, what didn't work, and what we could be doing better. It was clear we had the structural tools in place to be safe, but lacked the cultural attitude to successfully implement,” he said. “Our subsequent success is the result of a sincere cultural dedication to being safe: not just doing it because we have to, but because we want to.”

Wetherford and others drew on past incidents to build a better policy. “Poor practices showed us where we needed to build for a safer future,” he said. “The key was not to consider safety as a separate element, but as part of our daily process: making safe practices as unconscious and commonplace as fastening a seatbelt. Where we’ve succeeded, we don’t think of safety as a distinct different process, but just a common step in every task we perform.”

Garland said that all credit for the new record is ultimately due to the people that work at the Wabash mill. “While we can provide direction, tools, and encouragement, this is the workers’ success story,” he said. “A record like this takes every single person pulling their weight. Without the commitment of labor and management to work together towards this important common goal, Wabash would not be where it is today. Employee and environmental safety have been key core values at PaperWorks since it was formed, and will continue to be focus areas for improvement for all of our locations and employees.”

Today saw the launch of the company’s new Web site: a redesigned, restructured entity designed to allow paperboard and packaging industry professionals immediate access to crucial information.

“When people visit us on the Web, it’s because they need information,” says Mark P. Roy, PaperWorks’ Vice President, Sales & Marketing. “We redesigned our Web site to give them near-instant access to anything they need.”

Designed to avoid the clunky B2B pitfall of menus upon menus, the PaperWorks site keeps information top-level and accessible to any visitor through an intuitive menu system and strict content management: avoiding the accrued text and images that bog even the best-intentioned sites down over time.

One innovation in the site’s creation was the division of its content in three parts: separate sub-sites for the corporate, paperboard and packaging arms of the company. “People are generally looking for one of the three,” Roy explains. “To deliver information quickly, we direct them to the right section, then put everything at most two clicks away.” The result is a focus on pertinent content for people seeking information on the corporation, its paperboard, or its packaging work.

Renzo Sparavier, the packaging division’s Director of Sales & Business Development, feels that the site reflects the values of the Specialized Packaging Group. “It was important for our legacy of quality, innovation, and customer focus to be well represented. Small touches like incorporating the classic SPG logo in the site maintains the strong brand image,” he says. “Creating a different sub-site for this division within the main PaperWorks structure allows us to establish ourselves as part of the PaperWorks family, while showing that what made SPG a preferred carton supplier continues to define us even in that context.”

The site went online today, at www.paperworksindustries.com.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, December 4, 2009: PaperWorks Industries, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certification for some of its production across its MasterWorks line of products – and that the lengthy process has resulted in some additional advantages.

FSC certification is a system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.

This five-year certification means the company has been officially recognized as committed to strict tracking requirements. Customers that see FSC chain of custody number SCS-COC-002890 on their materials can have confidence that their FSC-certified products come from responsibly managed forest resources.

“Not only are we proud of our FSC Chain of Custody certification, but it provides a significant advantage to customers who want FSC certification for their products in turn,” says Mark P. Roy, Senior Vice President, Commercial Development. “By providing FSC-certified products, we give them a major part of the custody chain with products they can use without requiring a rigorous on-site supplier audit process.”

Provided through independent certifier Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), the certification was the result of an involved and thorough process that evaluated the company’s systems, sources, and methods.

“The project dealt with designing work processes to maintain compliance with FSC chain of custody requirements,” says Scott Oertel, Process Engineer at PaperWorks Industries and an instrumental part of the certification process. “The team’s approach has ensured zero negative effects on product quality while meeting FSC requirements.”

The certification process has even added a new quality-control element to PaperWorks Industries’ production process: visual inspections of every load that arrives at the mills, with deep audit testing performed every week. “FSC certification has resulted in another quality control step for all MasterWorks grades of paperboard,” Roy says. “More than something done for compliance, we’re using this as a way to add more value to our final product.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA, August 7, 2009 – After nearly a full year in business, PaperWorks Industries is continuing to make waves in the North American paperboard market.

This week saw the official release of the fledgling company’s full range of grades, a comprehensive offering that rivals those of its larger competitors. As Senior Vice President of Commercial Development Mark P. Roy explained, this is the result of an extensive effort to integrate and upgrade the product of the two mills that comprise PaperWorks.

“These two mills both produced great products – but each in their own way,” said Roy. “What we’ve done is examine their strengths and reinforce them, creating grades in calipers ranging from 16 pt up to 38 pt that meet our clients’ needs consistently and reliably.”

With needs as varied as those of converters, that becomes a comprehensive list – the starting lineup for PaperWorks Industries fields a team of eight different paperboards, each offering the industry a different set of attributes and assets. Those qualities range from rugged resistance to blister backing, from uncoated eco-friendly paperboard to freezer-enhanced light-backed CRB.

The product line has been named MasterWorks, which refers to the PaperWorks brand itself and reflects the craftsmanship that this company’s experienced staff brings to its primary product. Full product sheets, including suggested uses and complete technical details, are available for download from the PaperWorks website at www.paperworksindustries.com.

“Between these eight new products, we encompass the vast bulk of the industry’s needs,” Roy says. “This efficient approach means we can focus on quality and reliability, letting our customers benefit with every sheet of paperboard they convert and print for their end users.”

PaperWorks is a new paperboard entity with strong roots

How can a company be both new and experienced? Let PaperWorks Industries, Inc. resolve that paradox: created from the divestment of two mills during the Graphic Packaging and Altivity merger of 2008, this new company has been built from the twin pillars of two well-established mills, staffed with a team of seasoned industry experts.

“Sun Capital Partners saw an opportunity to take two excellent mills and combine them to leverage their strengths in a whole new context,” said Mark P. Roy, Senior Vice President of Commercial Development for PaperWorks. “This means we have hit the ground running, continuing to supply our customers with quality paperboard and exceptional service. The organizational structure has changed, but we’re still largely the same people producing the same reliable products.”

As part of the shift into their new identity, the PaperWorks team has taken steps to make sure those products maintain their rigid standards of quality while refining and expanding the line of products the fledgling company offers. “Our powder detergent CRB is our biggest seller,” said Roy, “It’s not all we do, however. As the largest independent CRB producer in North America, we produce a variety of grades with calipers ranging from .016 to .038 in either rolls or sheets. We also offer uncoated board and other specialty products. We’ve been reviewing our product line, and will be announcing a new product grade line and new brand names for what we offer very soon.”

Philadelphia, PA and Wabash, IN are the homes of the PaperWorks mills, and produce 300,000 tons of 100% clay-coated, recycled paperboard every year: justifying their status as the USA’s largest independent CRB mill group. End-use markets include folding cartons for dry and frozen foods, household goods, oral care products, powder detergent products and beverage products. “We make paperboard with the end user in mind,” Roy said, “and work harder to make sure our customers are satisfied. Service is one of our strongest points – we’re here to advise and customize, and work around the clock to deliver what’s needed, when and where it is required.”

Sustainability is also a major component of the PaperWorks formula. “We have one of the most robust recycling facilities in the nation at our Philadelphia mill,” Roy said. “Ecological soundness is one of our strong points, and we’re very cautious to make sure we can live up to the commitments we make.”

In the end, the creation of PaperWorks Industries has been an opportunity to retain two of America’s best paperboard mills in full operation, but with a refreshed approach, a revitalized staff and a renewed dedication to service and excellence. “It’s hard to imagine how a new company could start off on a better foot than this one has,” Roy said. “PaperWorks is going to be around for the long haul and delivering reliable, consistent paperboard backed by excellent service for decades to come.”

The environment is a priority for the industry’s largest independent CRB producer
When you think about recycling and paperboard, Philadelphia may not be the first thing that springs to mind.

But history says it should be: Philadelphia, after all, was the site of the world’s first paper mill, all the way back in 1690. In 1817, this same great city saw the invention of the world’s first cylinder-driven continuous press. And by some accounts, 1881 was when Philadelphia produced the world’s very first recycled paperboard.

An impressive history. And now, in that very city, PaperWorks Industries is working to honor that legacy by running an impeccably sustainable operation that keeps ecology as one of its top priorities.

Philadelphia is home to one of PaperWorks’ two mills – it, along with its sister mill in Wabash, IN, produce 300,000 tons of 100% clay-coated, recycled paperboard every year: justifying their status as the USA’s largest independent CRB mill group. End-use markets include folding cartons for dry and frozen foods, household goods, oral care products, powder detergent products and beverage products.

But the Philadelphia mill is also Ground Zero for a breathtaking recuperation effort, drawing recyclable material in from a radius of hundreds of miles to convert office waste and other recycled matter into new boxes for daily use. “We draw material from as far as the Tri-State area, and convert it into new product right here,” said Thomas J. Garland, President and CEO of PaperWorks, from its corporate office at 5000 Flat Rock Road in Philadelphia. “It’s an amazing sight: thousands of tons of material rolling in on a weekly basis, all to be transformed into the durable, reliable products we’re renowned for.”

And while PaperWorks Industries specializes in 100% recycled board, don’t get the impression that it’s all the same material. “PaperWorks Industries is committed to providing 100% coated recycled boxboard products for the broadest range of end use applications available,” Garland said. “With an extensive caliper range from .016 to .038 in either rolls or sheets, our facilities manufacture Newsback, Kraftback, Liteback and various other specialty paperboard grades for various customer brand packaging. An overhaul of our product grade line and new brand names are coming very soon.”

Sustainability is also a word that extends beyond this new company’s environmental values and onto its own structure: PaperWorks Industries is a corporation that’s been built to last. “Sun Capital Partners has structured us with seasoned staff, excellent backing and a long-term plan,” Garland said. “PaperWorks may be new as a company, but we’re going to be around for the long haul – and since we’re planning to be around for ages to come, we’re invested in keeping the planet in great shape along with us!”
